Emotional Intelligence: From Theory to Practice

How are you feeling? It’s not an idle question. Are you stressed? Bored? Enthusiastic? The idea that emotions matter and matter a great deal – from learning to decision making to relationships to mental health to everyday effectiveness will be the presentation’s theme. Marc will describe the key skills of emotional intelligence and Yale’s “RULER” approach to teaching emotional intelligence. RULER is an acronym that stands for Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing and Regulating emotions. RULER can help you understand yourself better. RULER has been shown to decrease stress, boost academic performance, reduce bullying and provide critical skills to thrive in life.

Marc Brackett, Ph.D., is director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. He is senior research scientist in psychology and faculty fellow in the Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy at Yale University. He co-created RULER, collaborated extensively with Peter Salovey and has developed two university courses on emotional intelligence. Marc also is working with Facebook on a large-scale research project designed to both prevent and decrease online bullying, Marc serves on numerous research advisory boards, including Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation.
