Sunday shone brightly which was appropriate for David Carel, our area’s Yale senior who has been awarded the Rhodes Scholarship, to speak to the Yale Club of Philadelphia. He dazzled the crowd for over an hour with a thorough review of the process of applying and being selected for the prize.
Perhaps most interestingly were David’s remarks on his work in South Africa on health care policy and programs. He shows a passion for the issues of health care delivery and improvement in that country where his parents grew up. This passion, no doubt, influenced the Rhodes selection process.
We had a comfortable setting with chairs wrapped around our speaker, and this invited a dialogue with many members. Chris Kule, Class of 1967 and a new Yale Club member, even suggested that one of his class Rhodes Scholars was from South Africa, and he would get him in touch with David.
The Yalies owe a great deal to David for coming during his spring break and speaking. Everyone thought he was terrific, and our president, Catherine Lafarge, might have said it best, “When you hear the accomplishments of someone like David, it makes you feel good about the younger generation in general and the new crop of Yale graduates.”
YALE RHODES SCHOLAR IN PHILLY
Sunday March 17th at 1:45PM
Dear Fellow Philadelphia Area Yalies-
You may have seen that out of this year’s 32 American Rhodes Scholarship winners seven hailed from Yale. Better still, one hailed from the Philadelphia area and will speak with us March 17th!
David Carel will join us for a St. Patrick’s Day discussion on his experience with the Rhodes application. He will also fill us in on global health activism at Yale and abroad.
We hope you can join us Sunday, March 17th, at 1:45 PM. We’ll get to know one another and follow with David speaking to us for 45 minutes or so. I expect we’ll have some conversation after that, and then we can grab some light refreshments. You can be on your way around 3:30 PM.
We’ll meet at my home in Wayne. There is plenty of off-street parking. For anyone coming by train from Center City, the train leaves Suburban Station at 12:45 and arrives in Wayne at 1:19. I can pick you up. I’ll send directions to those who RSVP.
$20 for Non-Members & GuestsPlease RSVP by March 13, 2013.
